quick question to the balkan guys

I been watching the Eurobasket Women and in the russian team, almost 70% of the players have names like Stepanova etc.
Basically ending in 'va or 'a. I wonder whether this is related to the gender?
Like let's take as an example the name Stepanova. It's equal for a male would be Stepanov? Meaning Maria Stepanova and Igor Stepanov?
What i'm asking is, is the female gender adding an extra 'a to the family name?
