Can't get Q3 to work? :/

So I wanted to start playing some Q3 again, went to load up my Q3 and it just crashes constantly and wont get to the menu screen lol. Tried fresh installs and everything. I'm on W7 64 bit, I have an Nvidia gefore Gtx 770, the last time I played I had a 570. I think it might have something to do with the nvidia drivers or something but I can't find anything about it.

Any ideas/solutions?

I have an idea - noone playes quake anymore...install steam and cs:go

Did you load your cfg before running? If you did, it wont do with different graphic card, as you cfg remembers it.

If not, what happens? Do you get any error on the loading console? (That blue window screen thingy that loads lots of stuff before running)

I tried my old and a brand new default config, what happens is Quake 3 blue console starts, it launches the game (the blue window closes) then I get a grey screen on the game window followed by a windows error stating that Quake3.exe has crashed, send error report?
Don't know what else to do :l

It surely has to do something with graphic card and/or driver. Out of ideas how to fix it though... Maybe re-installing or updating the driver might help?

Try running it in windowed mode, and see if blue console is throwing an error after launch. Probably windows closes it after it breaks, but worth a shot.

Yeah half screen is still the same thing, don't get to see the console. I'll look into an older nvidia driver.

Well, the new graphic card is too new for good ol' q3

The graphics card will work with q3a as I've seen benchmark tests done with it.

If this was my situation, I'd make a separate fresh install of quake and see if that works.

I've also seen benchmarks, but with demo version. Can you try running demo instead of full?

Ive tried 3 fresh installs of Q3, even on different HDDs and I just tried the demo version but it still does the same. Looks lke everybody might be running outta ideas

Did you try to install it in compatibility mode too? Did you try to copy paste and run an already existing working Q3, instead of installing it? Did you try the setup.exe (probably in compatibility mode and as admin) in the quake 3 directory on the cd instead of the main setup.exe (that normally autoruns) in the root of the cd?

tried not installing but doing that thing with the pak0.pk3 and installing 1.16n?

Yeh it's because the setup.exe (the launcher) in the root of the cd is 16 bit which windows 7 doesn't run natively so stuff can go wrong, but the setup.exe in the quake3 directory isn't.

Yeah I tried all of the above, the main thing I was doing was the pak0 thing because of the setup errors lol.

You should try my quake 3 version to see if it makes any difference. It was the original nsr download years ago for 1.16n. I have been able to run this version on all Windows OS's and graphic cards without a hitch (especially when I have had previous installments fail on me for these very reasons in the past). That is probably because this is extract and play without any sort of install.

I don't have a series 7 card, but I am using a series 6 (660TI) just fine.

I recently Installed Windows 8 to see if it'd make any difference with drivers and it seems to have worked. I also deleted my previous Q3's and downloaded this one and it's working. Thanks!

Yeah, even with Windows 8.1, this thing has yet to fail me lol. I am glad to know you are good to go now.

I did though, it was W8.1 that fixed it.
